About the Course

This course is offered through the Department of Music at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

The Introduction to the Music Industry course MUS 2263 presents a broad overview of the recording and music industry, and explains how the various segments operate on a day-to-day basis: where monies are generated, who the key players are, how deals are made and broken, how interests are protected, and what the new developments in digital technology are that are changing the way that music is marketed, promoted, distributed, and heard. This course will have several hands-on opportunities aligned with students’ interests. Students are encouraged via the assignments to think as entrepreneurs as well as marketers.

This Blog is made possible thanks to a generous OER  (Open Educational Resources) grant. Thus, this course is part of UTSA Libraries’ OER initiative, a collaboration between Dr. Stan Renard and UTSA Libraries to encourage faculty adoption of free and low-cost instructional materials into courses. Music Librarian Emily Cox is our UTSA Library liaison.

How to Blog & Comments Rubric

The class consensus for grading blog comments is as follows:

  1. Start an argument or discussion (respectfully)
  2. Write at least three sentences. More than three is fine. (3+ sentences required)
  3. No rambling. Be clear, direct, to the point and logical. Write in a straightforward and clear manner.
  4. Be sure your comments are well thought out.
  5. Give details why you agree or disagree. Just saying, “I agree/I disagree” is not enough. Tell us why.
  6. For each argument or thought, illustrate with a link to another article, blog post, white paper, interview, podcast, video, slide show, etc. (1 link minimum per post). The process of adding a link to each blog comment will have you contribute to the overall resource pool of the class, building upon the foundation of the blog and becoming increasingly more effective as a writer and contributor.
